How to change Authentication setup for WESS

WESS allows for authentication using the following methods –

  1. Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) – End User logon
  2. Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) – Impersonated logon
  3. Microsoft 365 OAuth (EWS API) – End User logon
  4. Microsoft 365 OAuth (EWS API) – App-Only logon

Note

Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) - End User logon and Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) - Impersonated logon only work for On-premise solutions, not on Microsoft Office 365(cloud solutions)

Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) - End User logon or Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) - Impersonated logon

If you plan on using Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) – End User logon or Microsoft Exchange basic authorization (EWS API) – Impersonated logon then please refer to this article.

To successfully configure this you will need to follow these steps(Please note, you may need to involve your IT team or whoever has Microsoft Admin rights within your organisation):

Navigate to WESS configuration via Start > Configuration > Email Integrations > Exchange Sync > click on: Configuration tab and then select the Organisation you have set up or intend to update the authentication type, if you have 2 organisations you will need to switch both of them individually. When you have selected the organisation you will be taken to the organisation screen, navigate to Email Configuration and select one of the four options

Note

As of April 2025, Microsoft are changing how the EWSEnabled setting works in Exchange Online. Please click here to find more information on updating this setting or refer to Microsoft documentation

When you have selected the organisation you will be taken to the organisation screen, navigate to Email Configuration and select one of 2 options

Microsoft 365 OAuth (EWS API) - End User logon

Users will need to navigate to Preferences > Integrations > Exchange Sync, click on the ‘Refresh’ button (and ensure pop-ups are not blocked on your browser)

A pop-up should open for you to enter your credentials and complete Microsoft OAuth

Microsoft 365 OAuth (EWS API) - App-Only logon

If you have chosen Microsoft 365 OAuth (EWS API) – App-Only Logon and user has already completed Microsoft OAuth previously(a valid authentication token exists in Workbooks) then they should see a screen similar to this

If the user hasn’t authenticated before then please refer to this knowledge base article.
